Project Description

Project description:

BACKGROUND
Besides being crucial in coagulation and wound healing, platelets (PLTs) are known mediators of inflammatory response. Furthermore, PLTs not only guide immune cells to sites of extravasation, but also tumor cells. Thereby, PLTs are key players in dissemination of tumor cells. We have found that various phytotherapeutics can modulate PLT functions. We now want to investigate the role of these phytotherapeutics in the interaction of PLTs with immune and tumor cells.

STUDENT'S TASKS (methods will be taught)
- Isolate PLTs from whole blood
- Evaluate interaction of PLTs with tumor and immune cells using flow cytometry
- Investigate effect of phytotherapeutics on immune cells and tumor cells using ELISA, Western blot or immunostaining techniques

Outcome

We want to get a better understanding of the molecular mechanisms behind PLT-tumor interactions and how to modulate them. This way, we could pave the path for a novel therapy option that might reduce tumor metastasis.

Working hours per week planned:

40
