Document templates and document styles

A document template is used to define the structure of documents. It is the document template that decides what sections exist in the documents based on that template and what the user can do with that content. For each document template, there are various document styles and Fiduswriter comes with a number of document styles for the default document template. The document styles are used to define how a document is visually shown in the editor and in a number of other export formats. Changing the document style (e.g. from Comfy Elephant to FoxyFox) visually changes the document in

  • the browser
  • the epub export
  • the html export
  • the print export.

These document styles contain a so-called *.css style sheet as well as font files that are required for that style. Currently, the following document styles/document style sheets are available:

Within the Fiduswriter document it is possible to change these document styles in the "Settings", then "Document Style" like this:

As already said, this will visually change the document (e.g. header fonts) in your browser window. The *.css style sheet comes with font files that define the font used within the particular style sheet in the browser. In general, the document template is used to produce different layouts with the various document styles as shown in the screenshot above. It is possible to add or remove document styles with the document template editor dialog. These would add more document styles to the above five default document styles. A standard user can add more document styles - it is not necessary to be an administrator. Note that the document style (and associated *.css style sheets) do not change any of the document output into JATS, LaTeX, ODT and DOCX - the chosen document style has no effect on these outputs.

Document export templates

In addition, each document template can contain zero to multiple export templates. An export template has a similar function as one of the five document styles, and specifies word processor output into *.docx and *.odt files. These export templates are ODT and DOCX files that contain placeholders for where the different sections are to be placed in the exported DOCX and ODT files. Generally, export templates can be added or removed from Fiduswriter, but at the time of writing there is only two export templates - one such export template for *.docx and one for *.odt file exports. There is a document template editor where additional document templates can be created. All available export templates for a given document template will be shown in the export dialog. It is also possible to remove the two default export templates. In the following admin option screenshot the document styles are in the magenta-coloured area and the export templates come underneath:
