Guest Account

TUM has many different types of guests (e.g., visiting lecturers, visiting researchers, scholarship holders, and temporary staff) who need or wish to use the central IT services during their stay at TUM.

To obtain a guest account in TUMonline, the guest must contact their host unit. The staff of the unit can arrange a guest entry with the responsible guest administrator.

  • You can find the responsible guest administrator via the ‘Functions’ link in TUMonline (step-by-step guide).

  • Since you unfortunately need to be logged in to perform this search, please ask a colleague, fellow student, or IT support to look up this information for you.

Special Case

Due to separate personnel administration systems, many members of the Faculty of Medicine are also classified as ‘guests’. In this case, we recommend transferring the data to TUMonline, which must be requested. (more information).

TUM-GuestCard

Guests of TUM can apply for a GuestCard. It serves as a:

  • Guest ID (with photo)

  • Library card (barcode on the back)

  • Student Services money card / cafeteria card (e.g., for the cafeteria or café)

The GuestCard works contactlessly, meaning it only needs to be held near the reader for reading, charging, or debiting.

Application for the GuestCard

To apply for the GuestCard, you must:

  1. have a valid guest account (see details here)
  2. upload a photo in TUMonline (see details here, without step 4)

  3. send an email to IT Support (it-support@tum.de) with the subject ‘GuestCard Application’, including your TUM ID as well as your last name and first name.

You will be notified by email when the card is ready.

Validation and Signature

To use the GuestCard fully, it must first be signed and then validated once. If your guest status expires and is extended, a re-validation is required.

Adding Credit

You can top up the GuestCard at any Student Services money loader. Money loaders are available in all cafeterias and dining halls of the Student Services at TUM. You can also top up the card at many touch machines (combination of hot beverage and snack machines). The GuestCard can be loaded with €5, €10, €20, and €50 bills.

Storage

To ensure the long-term functionality of the GuestCard, the following should be avoided:

  • Bending the GuestCard (risk of contact or antenna breakage)

  • Slight permanent warping (may cause problems with printing data on the TRW stripe during validation)

  • Washing or contact with liquids, especially chemicals

  • High temperatures

  • Heavy dirt or contamination

  • Storing near an EC card

Loss, Theft, or Defect

Please report the loss or theft of your GuestCard immediately to IT Support by email. (it-support@tum.de)

Afterwards, also have your library number blocked at one of the branch libraries to prevent misuse of your card. When the GuestCard is reissued, a new library number will be assigned. Please have the library number updated at one of TUM’s branch libraries at that time.

Expiration

The validity of the GuestCard ends with the conclusion of your guest status at TUM. Please return your GuestCard to IT Support at that time.

Wi-Fi for Temporary GuestID

If you want to provide event participants WiFi access, you can set up temporary IDs for a maximum of seven days via "LRZ-Masteruser" (Master-User-Services, "WLAN-Gastkennungen").

These IDs only provide simple WiFi access using the network SSID "eduroam". The WiFi guest user password, which is set by the Master User, is activated immediately. It requires no confirmation and does not need to be changed by the guest user.

These IDs are not valid for other services, especially the VPN. As before, access to any other services requires setting up a completely personalized ID via the TUMonline guest administrator.
