This event consists of an online dry-run session on 15 October 2025, 14:00-17:00 CEST and the actual on-site Hackathon at LRZ in Garching near Munich on 12-13 November 2025, 10:00-17:00 CET.

The online dry-run session is open for all registered people.

The final teams for the actual on-site Hackathon at LRZ will be selected following the dry-run session, due to limited on-site capacity. There will be no possibility to join the actual Hackathon online remotely via video conference. Participants are expected to bring their own laptops. There are no PCs installed in the seminar room!

Contents

The aim of this multi-day event is to help users get up and running on the SuperMUC-NG Phase 2 partition, which features Intel Ponte Vecchio accelerators. The first in a series of upcoming Hackathons, this edition will focus on user projects in the Machine Learning and Deep Learning domains. Participants will benefit from direct access to the cluster and hands-on support from LRZ and Intel experts. Together, we'll work on:

  •  Understanding the system's architecture and available resources
  •  Exploring the software stack for Machine Learning and Deep Learning applications
  •  Getting user code running efficiently on the system
  •  Identifying performance bottlenecks and planning optimisation strategies

To ensure a smooth start, a preparatory online dry-run session will be held in advance to familiarise users with cluster access and navigation. The on-site Hackathon will include brief introductory presentations, followed by ample time for hands-on work on participants' project codes in close collaboration with Intel and LRZ experts.

The Hackathon is co-organised by LRZ and Intel.

Prerequisites

  • Teams are expected to be fluent with the code or project they bring to the event and motivated to make progress during the Hackathon.
  • A general background in AI and GPU computing (not specific to Intel hardware) is beneficial.
  • It would be advantageous if the code already supports execution on single- or multi-GPU systems.

Hands-On

The main focus of the Hackathon will be on hands-on sessions with participants’ own codes, supported by Intel and LRZ experts.

The Hackathon will be conducted on the SuperMUC-NG Phase 2 system hosted at LRZ. The selected teams will receive access to the SuperMUC-NG Phase 2 system shortly after the dry-run session to allow sufficient time for adapting and testing their codes on the platform.
