A free Zotero account is limited to 300 MB of file space upon registration - Zotero provides these 300MB storage for free. If, for example, a single pdf-format paper uses up 1 megabyte, a user can store up to 300 papers in a free Zotero account. Books or powerpoint files tend to be larger, and then a user could soon hit the 300 MB limit in her/his personal library or even more likely, a group library. Viewing the Zotero storage space is shown here:

If more storage space is needed for an individual user, it is possible to use WebDAV together with a 3rd party storage provider to store the paper library elsewhere. A number of 3rd party cloud space providers are shown below. It is important to note that using a 3rd party cloud space provide under WebDAV is not working with a group library - this is only working with a personal library. Zotero points this out as follows:

''WebDAV is a standard protocol for transferring files over the web, and it can be used to sync files in your personal library. Group libraries cannot currently use WebDAV. Your employer or research institution may be able to provide WebDAV storage. ... Once you have your WebDAV account info, enter the URL provided by the service, your username, and your password in the Sync preferences tab. Be sure to select 'http' or 'https' as appropriate - if you're not sure, try 'https' first. After entering the information, click ''Verify Server''. If Zotero successfully verifies the WebDAV account, you're all set to use file syncing via WebDAV. Zotero file sync should work with any correctly functioning WebDAV server.'' Not all the 3rd party cloud space providers shown in the above screenshot have successfully been used by Zotero users - they may have limitations and must be used with care. Not all provide free storage solutions and not all available WebDAV enabled cloud storage providers listed above work well with Zotero. If a Zotero group library needs more space, the only viable option at the moment is to buy more webspace at Zotero, unless the TUM library buys a corporate account in the future for TUM students and staff. If a user wants to use koofr 3rd party webspace, the credentials need to be typed into Zotero like this:

Zotero needs the https://koofr.eu/ user name and password to store the reference library in the koofr cloud under the WebDAV protocol. Note also that https://koofr.eu/ do not allow the standard password for the site - with WebDAV https://koofr.eu/ wants a new password that can be generated on the web interface once the user has logged into her/his https://koofr.eu/ account.
